The number of best apps for Xperia Ion and best Games for Xperia Ion available for the platform has rocketed. And that means more free Android apps and games for Xperia Ion. There's a lot of junk out there but, fortunately, there are gems among the junk.
We've worked our way through a whole load of Android games to reveal the ones you should download to your Xperia Ion. If we've missed your favourite free Android game, let us know in the comments.
1. Angry Birds
The amazingly popular iOS game moved to Android a while ago, earning over two million downloads during its first weekend of availability.
The Android version is free, unlike the Apple release, with maker Rovio opting to stick a few adverts on it rather than charge an upfront fee. The result is a massive and very challenging physics puzzler that's incredibly polished and professional. For free. It defies all the laws of modern retail.
Angry Birds for Android was first available to download from app store GetJar but is now available through Google Play.
2. Bebbled
Bebbled is your standard gem-shuffling thing, only presented in a professional style you wouldn't be surprised to see running on something featuring a Nintendo badge with an asking price of £19.99.
You only drop gems on other gems to nuke larger groups of the same colour, but with ever-tightening demands for score combos and scenes that require you to rotate your phone to flip the play field on its head, Bebbled soon morphs into an incredibly complex challenge.
3. Red Stone
There's an awful lot of square-shuffling games on Android and Red Stone is one of the best. And one of the hardest. You start off with a big fat 'King' square that's four times of the normal 'pawn' squares, then set about shuffling things so the fat King can get through to an exit at the top of the screen.
It's hard to accurately describe a puzzle game in the written word, but seriously, it's a good game.
4. Newton
Released a few months back in beta form, Newton is a maths/physics challenge that has you lining up shots at a target - but having to contend with the laws of nature, in the form of pushers, pullers, benders (no laughing), mirrors and traps, all deflecting your shot from its target.
The developer is still adding levels to it at the moment, so one day Newton might be finished and might cost money. But for now it's free and a great indie creation.
5. Sketch Online
Surprisingly free of crude representations of the male genitalia, Sketch Online is a sociable guessing game where users do little drawings then battle to correctly guess what's being drawn first. It's like Mavis Beacon for the Bebo generation. The version labelled "Beta" is free, and if you like it there's the option to pay for an ad-free copy. But Google can't make you. Yet.
6. Drop
Some might call Drop a game, others might classify it as a tech demo that illustrates the accuracy of the Android platform's accelerometer, thanks to how playing it simply involves tilting your phone while making a little bouncy ball falls between gaps in the platforms. Either way it'll amuse you for a while and inform you of the accuracy of your accelerometer - a win-win situation.
7. Frozen Bubble
Another key theme of the independent Android gaming scene is (ports of) clones of popular titles. Like Frozen Bubble, which is based around the ancient and many-times-copied concept of firing gems up a screen to make little groups of similarly coloured clusters. That's what you do. You've probably done it a million times before, so if it's your thing get this downloaded. 8. Replica Island
Replica Island is an extremely polished platform game that pulls off the shock result of being very playable on an Android trackball. The heavy momentum of the character means you're only switching direction with the ball or d-pad, letting you whizz about the levels with ease. Then there's jumping, bottom-bouncing, collecting and all the other usual platform formalities.
9. Gem Miner
In Gem Miner you are a sort of mole character that likes to dig things out of the ground. But that's not important. The game itself has you micro-managing the raw materials you find, upgrading your digging powers and buying bigger and better tools and maps. Looks great, plays well on Android's limited button array. Go on, suck the very life out of the planet.
10. ConnecToo
Another coloured-square-based puzzle game, only ConnecToo has you joining them up. Link red to red, then blue to blue - then see if you've left a pathway through to link yellow to yellow. You probably haven't, so delete it all and try again. A brilliantly simple concept. ConnecToo used to be a paid-for game, but was recently switched to an ad-supported model - meaning it now costs you £0.00. 11. Titres
Once you're successfully rewired your brain's 25 years of playing Tetris in a certain way with certain buttons and got used to tapping the screen to rotate your blocks, it's... Tetris. It hinges on how much you enjoy placing things with your phone's trackball or pad. If you're good at it, it's a superb Tetris clone. Let's hope it doesn't get sued out of existence. UPDATE: While Titres seems to have been removed from Google Play, there's now an official Tetris app available to download.
12. Trap!
Not the best-looking game you'll ever play, with its shabby brown backgrounds and rudimentary text making it look like something you'd find running on a PC in the year 1985. But Trap! is good. You draw lines to box in moving spheres, gaining points for cordoning off chunks of the screen. That sounds rubbish, so please invest two minutes of your time having a go on it so you don't think we're talking nonsense.
13. Jewels
Coloured gems again, and this time your job is to switch pairs to make larger groups which then disappear. That might also sound quite familiar. The good thing about Jewels is its size and presentation, managing to look professional while packing in more levels than should really be given away for free. 14. OpenSudoku
We had to put one Sudoku game in here, so we'll go with OpenSudoku - which lives up to its open tag thanks to letting users install packs of new puzzles generated by Sudoku makers. It's entirely possible you could use this to play new Sudoku puzzles for the rest of your life, if that's not too terrifying a thought.
15. Abduction!
Abduction! is a sweet little platform jumping game, presented in a similarly quirky and hand-drawn style as the super-fashionable Doodle Jump. You can't argue with cute cows and penguins with parachutes, or a game that's easy to play with one hand thanks to its super accessible accelerometer controls.
16. The Great Land Grab
A cross between a map tool and Foursquare, The Great Land Grab sorts your local area into small rectangular packets of land - which you take ownership of by travelling through them in real-time and buying them up. Then someone else nicks them off you the next day, a bit like real-world Risk. A great idea, as long as you don't mind nuking your battery by leaving your phone sitting there on the train with its GPS radio on. 17. Brain Genius Deluxe Our basic legal training tells us it's better to use the word "homage" than to label something a "rip-off", so we'll recommend this as a simple "homage" to the famed Nintendo Brain Training franchise. Clearly Brain Genius Deluxe is not going to be as slick, but there's enough content in here to keep you "brain training" (yes, it even uses that phrase) until your battery dies. The presentation's painfully slow, but then again that might be the game teaching you patience.
18. Coloroid
Coloroid is aery, very simple and has the look of the aftermath of an explosion in a Tetris factory, but it works. All you do is expand coloured areas, trying to fill them in with colours in as few moves as possible - like using Photoshop's fill tool at a competitive level. 19. Cestos
Cestos is sort of a futuristic recreation of curling, where players chuck marbles at each other to try and smash everyone else's balls/gems down the drain and out of the zone. The best part is this all happens online against real humans, so as long as there's a few other bored people out there at the same time you'll have a real, devious, cheating, quitting person to play against. Great.
20. Air Control
One of the other common themes on the Android gaming scene is clones of games based around pretending to be an air traffic controller, where you guide planes to landing strips with a swish of your finger. There are loads of them, all pretty much the same thing - we've chosen Air Control as it's an ad-supported release, so is technically free.
21. GalaxIR
GalaxIR is a futuristic strategy game with an abstract look, where players micro-manage an attacking alien fleet. Pick a planet, pick an attack point, then hope your troops have the balls to carry it off. There's not much structure to the game as yet, but that's what you get when you're on the bleeding-edge of free, independent Android gaming development. 22. Graviturn
Graviturn is an accelerometer based maze game, where the aim is to roll a red ball out of a maze by tilting your phone around. Seems embarrassingly easy at first, until increasing numbers of green balls appear on screen. If any green balls roll off the screen you die and have to try again. It's abstract. It's good.
23. Alchemy Classic
There are a few variants on Alchemy out there, each offering a similarly weird experience. In Alchemy Classic you match up elements to create their (vaguely) scientific offspring, so dumping water onto earth makes a swamp, and so on. It's a brain teaser thing and best played by those who enjoy spending many hours in the company of the process of elimination.
24. ActionPotato
In ActionPotato you control three pots. Pressing on the pots makes them jump up into the air, where they harvest potatoes. See how many you can get in a row. That's the gist of it. And don't collect the rotten potatoes, else you die. That really is it. The Google Play stats say this is on well over 1,000,000 downloads, so it's doing something right.
25. Scrambled Net
Scrambled Net is based around the age-old concept of lining up pipes and tubes, but has been jazzed up with images of computer terminals, high score tracking and animations. Still looks like something you'd have played on a Nokia during the last decade, but it's free - and looking rubbish hardly stopped Snake from taking off, did it?
Sony thought Red PS3 edition be a good idea to peddle the special edition PS3 in the land down under. It’s going to Australia. Under the hood, it is the same as the black 320 GB model, but it’s red. It also comes with a red controller.
It marks the drvonf time that Sony has offered a colored PS3 in an English-speaking region. In Japan, however, the company has been offering special versions of the console for years. It’s just like any other console; Japan always gets the cool stuff, leaving the “one size fits all” version for the picky US consumers.
There has been no indication that the red model will be making its way to other regions, but after coming to both the UK and Australia within a month of each other, there’s certainly reason to believe this is part of a continuing strategy. Then again, it’s possible that perhaps this won’t lead to anything else. Either way, at least it’s a good sign that Sony is looking at ways of shaking up the market.
Sony Red PS3 Price in Australia
Sony Red PS3 will launch in Australia on May 31. The price of Sony Red PS3 Australia editions is for around $460. This estimate price according to the Slashgear post.
The first, and the most important thing to get out of the way is that N.O.V.A. 3 is NOT a freemium title. Gameloft have played the freemium waters, successfully at times, spectacular failures at other times. But let me repeat, N.O.V.A. 3 will not be a freemium title. There will be in-app purchases available for certain things, but they are not required to play or progress through the game. Whew. I know that takes a load off many core gamers minds.
NOVA 3 follows the hero, Kal Wardin, in a fight against extraterrestrial invaders. He will be traveling to the abandoned city of San Francisco as well as to a number of alien planets. This latest sequel will introduce iron sights and aim assistance along with the ability to slow down time for more accurate aiming.
The multiplayer mode will now allow for playable vehicles online, letting multiple players use a mech, jetpack, and war buggy simultaneously. There will also more customization options and in-app purchases. The game is expected to arrive for the iPhone, iPad, and Android in May, while the Xperia-Play version will be released shortly thereafter.
Gameloft has just released the official gameplay trailer for the upcoming NOVA 3, which was teased last week. This sequel to the popular first-person iOS shooter game will make major improvements on the visuals with dynamic lighting and a real physics engine. It will also take advantage of the new iPad’s super high-resolution Retina display.
Although Sony hasn’t officially cut the price of the PS3 (PlayStation 3) since last fall, GameStop has taken it upon itself to slash the cost of the system to the magic sub-$200 mark. The retailer now lists the 160 GB version of the Sony console as being available for $199.99. That is $50 less than Sony’s manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $249.99. The cheapest place in the country to buy a new PS3 right now is GameStop.
Now, GameStop has not put out any sort of press release about this, and being that the retail world is incredibly fickle, this could be some sort of temporary price drop or a promotion or just some sort of test for corporate to see how it affects sales. But for the time being, $200 is what you’ll be paying for a PS3 at any GameStop store across the country or on its website. No coupons, no gimmicks, nothing like that.
Given that video game equipment is known to have razor thin margins, it’s incredibly likely that GameStop is taking some sort of hit on every PS3 that it sells for $200, but it if it can peddle something like an extended warranty or some other high-margin service to customers, then it could end up being a profitable sale. Of course, that’s just retail 101.
The real question is if GameStop knows a secret and is trying to sell of inventory before a major Sony announcement happens. But who knows, really? If you’ve been wanting a PS3, all you need to know is it’s only $200 at this very moment.

Sony announced the PSP2, codenamed NGP, way back in January. However, while the company was pretty forthcoming with specs, it wasn’t quite ready to divulge pricing and a release date. Last night at its pre-E3 press conference, Sony filled in some of the blanks and renamed the device the Play Station Vita.

Their next generation user interface has come to Xbox 720 Features and it changes everything - but unless you're paying attention it could be years before you notice.
"First, we had the blades," says Microsoft's Live Growth Exec Robin Burrowes, "and it was great. But as more and more content was added to the Marketplace it got harder and harder to find what you wanted.
Then in 2008 we moved to what we called the 'New Xbox 720 Features Experience' which - in theory - made things easier to discover. But now we're expanding our content beyond gaming into entertainment services - services we're only beginning to realise in the UK. We're building this new dashboard to future proof for the next few years of Live services." "Future proof" is the point.
When the next generation rolls around it will be powered by a Metro-styled UI, just like 2012's Windows 8 and every mobile phone Microsoft make with HTC and Nokia. The first principles of Microsoft's new UI were introduced back in 2006 in the Zune media player, just one year after the release of 360.
The first generation of Zunes used large, bold, screen-filling text in a clean and modern font. Elements of the new design gradually trickled down into other Microsoft products - most notably, MSN Messenger - before getting the Metro name and becoming its own "design language" for Windows Phone 7 with the same "live tiles" you're using in your new Xbox 720 Features dashboard. In the original design book for Windows Phone 7, Metro's designers define Metro by saying:
"We think content should be elevated, and everything else should be minimised. Content is UI and users should be able to interact directly. Simple as that." It took them an entire book to make their point, but it's this one idea that made Metro perfect for 360
"I think it's about the ease of finding a greater breadth of content quicker," says Burrowes, "that's been it for us. The content within the Live Marketplace and the content available On Demand is fairly limitless. With the new interface the most important channels and slots can bubble to the top, but if you want to... discover, we're making that easy, too."
In its transition to 360 the Metro interface has dropped touch controls in favour of full Kinect support - voice and gestures can operate every page of the new interface without switching to a separate Kinect mode. It's an obvious move.
The next Xbox 720 Features - we'll call it Xbox 720 Features 720 for lack of a better name - will come bundled with Kinect and be sold on day one as a console for the hardcore and a media device that can power your entire life. The next version of Kinect - certainly smaller and better than the current model, running with the processing grunt to let it track multiple users right down to their fingers - will be at the very centre of the next console, as will some version of the Metro UI.
The new interface is built to turn 360 into a media hub and the next console is unlikely to be anything but a sleek black box through which everything on your telly flows. Like existing home theatre PCs, it'll connect to your Sky+ or Tivo box, stream video from the internet, and support every On Demand service Microsoft can sign contracts on.
On Demand video is a front-and-centre feature for the new dashboard, with UFC and ESPN already up and running in the US, and the BBC and Channel 4 over here. Offering YouTube and free OD TV is how Microsoft will snare new buyers, but their Zune On Demand service - another in-your-face feature - is how they'll make money from them and steal control of the living room from Apple and Sony.
The new Metro dashboard makes one thing very clear - Microsoft still want you to buy stuff, and if you're not buying stuff then you'd better be prepared to watch advertisements for stuff you don't want to buy.
The Xbox 720 Features could have been given a fully-customisable dashboard long ago if Microsoft wanted it, but both the NXE and Metro dashboards thrust paid advertising and promotions in your face and that's only set to continue on 720.
Microsoft also know that day one console buyers are the hardest of hardcore, which is why the Metro dashboard is already designed for core players - even if it's still hamstrung by the original Xbox 720 Features's Friends List.
The 360 had to support original Xbox 720 Features games on Live so the Friends List stayed capped at 100, but those Live servers closed in 2010 and yet the cap still remains. Microsoft seem attached to the 100-name limit, but with Facebook and Twitter right there on the front page don't be surprised when the next Xbox 720 Features ties your Facebook login, Gamertag, and Twitter account together. When that happens, the 100-name limit has to go.
For now, says Burrowes, the Xbox 720 Features's Metro-styled dashboard is as good as a user interface can be. "We've learned a lot from the Windows phone services in terms of user's ability to discover content through the hubs. That's something that we're bringing into the console, and yes we expect this version of the dash to be like this for a while."
For a while, sure, but the Xbox 720 Features is always evolving and always changing to meet the needs of an unpredictable future. When the Kinect-powered Holodesk and Omnitouch prototypes evolve you'll see an interface which can spring from the TV - an Augmented Reality HUD in a pair of 3D specs and virtual controls laid out on your coffee table.
This isn't ten years away. The technology exists today. And when it arrives, the Xbox 720 Features will adapt - again.

Facebook for Android is lacking in features compared to Facebook itself, but a recent update added Inbox support to the Android app, finally allowing its users to communicate in almost real time. The app's fast and stable, with a simplicity that reminds you of the old days when using Facebook used to be bearable.
Yes, the same Winamp from a decade ago. It's had an Android app for some time, with recent updates adding support for iTunes, Mac syncing, plenty of music streaming options, new release lists and Shoutcast integration for radio support. It's a fine, free media player.
There are plenty of messaging tools on Android, but Samsung's beats many of them by offering multi-platform support - with clients even available for older Samsung non-smart feature phones. It could be the ideal way to keep in touch with an out of touch relative. More "with it" users will be able to use its drawing, image sharing and social networking features.
An official production of the motoring organisation, RAC Traffic is dead simple - it guesstimates your location via the mobile signal, then pops up the current traffic alerts for your area. It's much better than having to listen to the radio for the odd update about arterial blockages.
6. Evernote
After the Android version of Dropbox, the next best solution for keeping all your 'business' in one place is Evernote - which lets you stash and sync all your text notes, voice memos and files on your phone and access them through a desktop computer.
7. Google Maps Navigation
An absolute must-get. As long as you have Android 1.6 or above, the latest update to Google Maps introduces turn-by-turn voice navigation, simultaneously devastating the satnav industry while boosting the in-car dashboard dock/charger accessory scene. Route calculations are done at the outset of your trip, minimising data transfer en route and keeping you on target even when the GPS signal drops. It's amazing, it works, and it's free.

WWE 12 – The Road to Wrestlemania is a Disappointing Miss Every year, sports gaming publishers upgrade their roster of titles. Typically, these releases tote colorful words like “revolutionary”, “enhanced”, “new modes” or “upgraded engine”. Yet, these boastful words rarely come to fruition (except in the case of NBA 2K11). After years of Smackdown vs. RAW titles, THQ decided to revamp the wrestling brand by releasing WWE 12. This game heralded all the great sports-sequel buzzwords. While in-your-face wrestling has never felt more brutal, several nagging issues with the gameplay hurt this from being the “revolutionary” title it could have been. The newly “enhanced” Road to Wrestlemania story mode does more to harm the franchise than help it. Also, WWE 12 suffers from a disturbingly bad counter system that will make you rue the day “AI” was created.
Ladder matches, Hell in a Cell, Battle Royals, Steel Cage slobberknockers – it’s all there in the exhibition mode. WWE 12 gives gamers a rich roster of wrestlers to choose from, which includes the DIVAS. In typical WWE fashion, the game gives you the fancy entrance sequences you’ve come to love the first time you play with each character (then you’ll probably skip through them to get straight to the action). Textures and character models look true to life. Now, it’s time to pummel your opponent’s stamina down to nothing and then land the three-count pin for the win. Once you enter your first match, however, you’ll notice one of the most irritating issues with WWE 12. Counters are nearly impossible to perform.
The counter option frequently comes up to alert you to press RT to initiate a reversal. It passes by in what can only be considered a nanosecond. Often, you will find yourself focused so intently on waiting for the counter option to come up that the fun of wrestling is lost. What makes this more irritating is that the AI opponents have no difficulty in initiating a counter. It makes computer matches less of a tactical game and more of a game of self-torture. Thankfully, you can always play with friends for less painful matches.
The create-your-own player mode is back and this time there is even a create-your-own arena mode. It’s a nice touch.
The big update to the wrestling franchise comes with the new story mode. Instead of a created player rising through the dregs of the wrestling world to eventually land a headlining spot at Wrestlemania, you are given a contrived story that focuses on Sheamus and Triple H. The story then shifts over to a created player. Previous games had smaller story moments, where factions and alliances shifted frequently. This game is focused on one contiguous story arc. Unfortunately, this story is as linear as it gets. And, within a wrestling setting it creates a very disruptive gaming experience that leaves you feeling unfulfilled each time.
Too often, matches don’t end with a pin. Instead, other wrestlers will run into the ring to disrupt the match. At other times, the gameplay will shift completely to a backstage fight. This would be fine if it happened once or twice. However, it occurs way too often. Getting disqualified or winning by disqualification just feels like a waste of time.
Perhaps this updated Road to Wrestlemania mode would have been a great idea if you had more control of the outcome of the story. The gameplay would feel more organic. However, control is completely tossed out the window. Sometimes the option to pin an opponent or tag out is disabled without warning. If you’re not expecting it (as I wasn’t), it will be extremely frustrating. It happens so often that you’ll start to get lazy about the actual match as you wait for the cut scene to steal the gameplay from you.
WWE 12 is a major miss for the wrestling franchise. If you’re fine with just playing against friends and online then you’re golden. Outside of the counters, grapples and signature moves work great. In the past, signature moves would interrupt combat. However, the engine has been revamped to limit that problem. Characters won’t magically jump from one part of the screen to another. Just remember that in the Road to Wrestlemania mode, the cut scenes will interrupt the action. New players to the franchise may not mind this, but loyal players will be more irritated by the lack of flexibility in this game. If you’re looking for a new wrestling game this year, I would suggest WWE All Stars first. It’s arcade wrestling as opposed to the more realistic simulation found in WWE 12, but it’s super satisfying. It will also hold you over for the imminent release of WWE 13 in 2012.
